The book, reviewed (ii)

The second review of Reading English Verse in Manuscript has arrived, from Oliver Pickering in the Journal of the Early Book Society (volume 23, 265–8; not yet available online). I’m glad to say that this one, like the first, is positive and appreciative! Pickering offers some thoughtful, engaged responses to aspects of method in the book, and sees some of its headline contributions to our model of the period.

The review’s also interesting as an example of reviewing rooted in a particular place, Leeds University Library: it remarks on my pattern of manuscript consultation there, and draws out ways in which the book’s findings might affect how one set of manuscripts is understood. It would be fun and I suspect fruitful to have more book reviews in journals which display this kind of localised knowledge!
